Description

As a specialised teacher in charge of deafblindness in an institute for young deaf people in France, I have had difficulties in getting young people with Usher syndrome to accept the proposed adaptations. Do they refuse this help for fear of being rejected by their deaf peers? Can the lack of knowledge of deafblindness lead to rejection? Can deaf youth be educated about deafblindness? The young people of our institute expressed their interest in deafblindness, hence the creation of the Sensory Workshop in a playful and accessible form. The objectives are, for young deaf people with visual impairment, to discover and experiment compensatory techniques and to become aware of brain plasticity. For young deaf people who are in contact with visually impaired peers, the workshops allow them to discover the techniques for accompanying deaf people with associated visual impairment.
