Description

The notion of conceptualizing brain related visual and auditory impairment (BAVI) in an integrated fashion, rather than as two distinct conditions incidentally presenting in the same person, is relatively recent. Impaired processing of both auditory and visual information creates a condition that is much more complex than the addition of the two single processing impairments. BAVI can lead to a range of deficits from a profound impairment to more subtle deficits of specific auditory and visual deficits and may share behavioural characteristics with both Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) and Cerebral Visual impairment (CVI). The clinical condition of BAVI has been described in war veterans as a result of blast exposure and in professional divers as a consequence of barotrauma and concussion, however, this definition may not be appropriate to people with deafblindness. As such this workshop will provide an approach for understanding BAVI in people with dual sensory impairment/deafblindness. Given the challenges in identification and assessment of central auditory processing and visual processing in dual sensory impairment (i.e., APD and CVI), it is not difficult to see why most people with deafblindness will not appear on the radar for a brain related auditory and visual impairment. The insight gained from this workshop may provide some specific knowledge and information for professionals and people with deafblindness regarding brain related auditory and visual impairment.
