Although most acquired deafblind people have developed necessary cognitive skills and concepts, the impact of the combined, often progressive, loss of sight and hearing is massive. Connections with the world alter profoundly and compensating the loss requires more than devices and skills, which tend to focus on compensating the sensory loss instead of strengthening the sensory potential. It's striking how little attention is given to the overall sensory changes that take place, as we know the sensory processing system is functioning as a whole. Especially the haptic sense, which obviously becomes ever more important as visual-auditory loss increases. The Tactual Profile Deafblindness aims to offer a well-founded scientifically based framework to create awareness and knowledge on the tactual functioning of acquired deafblind people to enrich available support.
